ENGLISH HUNTING PRINTS WITH AMERICAN CONNECTION

£495.00

Of interest to American clients. A Pair of traditional English Hunting Prints which carry an intriguing inscription, specifically: “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1899 by Louis Wolff & Co. in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington”. Discussions with the Office of the Librarian in Washington DC have revealed that Prints issued for sale or distribution (to the Library of Congress) were copyrighted to protect the proprietor’s initial investment. Such protection has been afforded by the U.S. Federal Government since the year 1802. It is unclear whether these examples made it to their destination & returned to the UK, or were never shipped as part of the delivery to Washington. Whichever, an intriguing provenance.
